“Heartquake” by L’Impératrice feat. Cuco

What causes a heartquake? The musical marriage of French sextet L’Impératrice’s nu-disco style with Cuco’s psychedelic vocals, of course.

Heartquake 💓 is “the story of someone completely disconnected from their emotions who is on their usual peaceful bus ride one morning. And then, someone sits across from them, and suddenly, their brain freezes, and they fall to their knees, struck by a thunderbolt, a kind of Tako tsubo. It’s a sensation that shakes them to the core, and they’re not sure if they can survive it, but they desire it.” Says the band.

Morgane from microqlima tapped me to create energetic artwork for this funky, summer-ready disco romp, along with a lyric video and a remix cover. I made it the only way I know how: moody and retro without getting too goofy. The result was a matrimony of pink and black with Swiss typography and riso textures that reflected the song’s psychedelic synth oscillations, funky guitar melodies, and vibey breakdown.

In 2024, we reconnected to design a vinyl featuring “Heartquake” and “Everything Eventually Ends,” their 2022 collab with Rejjie Snow.

Here are the (if I do say so myself!) heartstopping visuals we made.

Unapproved concepts. May they rest in concept heaven.
